What's Been Up...
Hi All!
We have been keeping very busy here at Hotbed, with an array of different projects...
In honor of Veterans Day, Deloitte brought us on to produce a project aimed to help veterans improve their interviewing techniques. Our Director, Stokes, flew out to LA earlier this month to team up with Deloitte's LA office and shoot the four part series. Now Jessica is hammering away at the edits and we hope to have it wrapped by next week. We are honored to be part of such a beneficial cause!
Here are some stills from the Deloitte Veterans videos:
In other news, Levi's has been keeping us busy with various projects; cutting together and animating some awesome footage. Our most recent Levis project allowed us to team up with our friends at Elevate, here in Columbus, to work on some cool graphics and animation.
And NOW, the moment you have all been waiting for....
I am proud to announce that the Hotbed team will be producing our own short this winter! In an effort not to give too much away- it will be in the realm of "Mean Girls" meets Zack Galifianakis meets tragedy. Needless to say we are super excited to get started and to share our vision with the world.
Stay tuned.
Big things are happen.

Post & a New Production Assistant!
Hey All!
It's been busy busy busy here at Hotbed! We thought we'd take the time to update you on some of the things we've been working on!

Stokes just finished up post-production on a Levis "Go Forth" project! (image above). It's a small looping video that will be live in stores, so the next time you're around a Levis Denim Bar - keep an eye out for it!
We have a couple more Levis projects coming down the pipeline. So keep your eyes peeled for those as well :)
Along with Levis, Deloitte has been keeping us on our toes. We're finishing up our first ever animation project with them (currently going through sound design) and also starting another internal video with them that we're very excited about. More later though!
We just finished up quite a few videos for the 2013 Oslo Freedom Forum last week as well! If you want to give them a view, just visit the Freedom Forum site here . All of the videos for this years speakers were edited by us - YAY!
In other super exciting awesome news, we just brought on a production assistant! Amanda is a May 2013 graduate from Ohio University with a degree in Media Management. We're super glad that she decided to join the team here - to help us grow and expand. We see a lot of awesome projects in our future, so here's to it!
Happy Friday all! We hope you're out enjoying the summer solstice!
~ The Hotbed Team
Peter Bjorn & John's "Young Folks" Covered by the Selectrics
The Selectrics covered Peter Bjorn & John's "Young Folks" for the motion picture Valley of the Sun. The song plays over the end credits. The Selectrics is a duo featuring Gina Marie and Smash Mouth guitarist and chief songwriter, Greg Camp (All Star, Walking on the Sun). Greg also composed and performed the original score for Valley of the Sun.
We only have the rights to post the song in the original context of the movie so we're rolling the credits with the song. It's also another opportunity to thank all of those who worked on and supported the movie. Thank YOU!

Effects & Animation (and Updates)
Hey All!
So, we had the pleasure of being shadowed for the last 3 days by the lovely Isabella! Isabella is a current student in Worthington who's school has an awesome program for getting students exposed to the careers they want to pursue! We were very happy to have her here with us and wish her the best of luck in the future!
While she was shadowing, we decided to scope out what's currently trending in the industry. This lead to us talking about the differences between animation, motion graphics, and special effects. Because of this, I thought that I'd put together a little lesson on just what the difference is between these different styles of our business.
MOTION GRAPHICS:
From Wiki:
Motion graphics are graphics that use video footage and/or animation technology to create the illusion of motion or rotation, and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects. Motion graphics are usually displayed via electronic media technology, but may be displayed via manual powered technology (e.g. thaumatrope, phenakistoscope, stroboscope, zoetrope, praxinoscope, flip book) as well. The term is useful for distinguishing still graphics from graphics with a transforming appearance over time without over-specifying the form.
SPECIAL EFFECTS (SFX):
From Wiki:
The illusions or tricks of the eye used in the film, television, theatre, videogame, or simulator industries to simulate the imagined events in a story or virtual world are traditionally called special effects (often abbreviated as SFX, SPFX, or simply FX). Special effects are traditionally divided into the categories of optical effects and mechanical effects. With the emergence of digital film-making tools a greater distinction between special effects and visual effects has been recognized, with "visual effects" referring to digital post-production and "special effects" referring to on-set mechanical effects and in-camera optical effects. Effects include things such as lens flares, forced perspective, compositing, rotoscoping, shaders, ect
VISUAL EFFECTS (VFX):
From Wiki:
Visual effects (commonly shortened to Visual F/X or VFX) are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot. Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, costly, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer generated imagery has recently become accessible to the Independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable animation and compositing software.
2D ANIMATION:
From Wiki:
Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images to create an illusion of movement. This type of presentation is usually accomplished with a camera and a projector or a computer viewing screen which can rapidly cycle through images in a sequence. Animation can be made with either hand rendered art, computer generated imagery, or three-dimensional objects, e.g., puppets or clay figures, or a combination of techniques. The position of each object in any particular image relates to the position of that object in the previous and following images so that the objects each appear to fluidly move independently of one another. The viewing device displays these images in rapid succession, usually 24, 25, or 30 frames per second.
3D ANIMATION:
From Wiki:
Computer animation or CGI animation is the process used for generating animated images by using computer graphics. The more general term computer-generated imagery encompasses both static scenes and dynamic images, while computer animation only refers to moving images. Computer animation is essentially a digital successor to the stop motion techniques used in traditional animation with 3D models and frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations.
